Your Cosmetology License Expired. Now What?

What happens when your cosmetology license expires, how to get it back, and how to make sure it never happens again.

If your cosmetology license has expired, do not panic. But do act fast. Here is what happens, what it costs, and how to fix it.

What happens when your license expires?

In most states, you cannot legally practice cosmetology with an expired license. Doing so can result in fines, disciplinary action, or even license suspension. Salons can also face penalties for employing someone with an expired license.

Grace periods

Most states offer a grace period of 30 to 90 days after expiry where you can still renew, usually with a late fee. During this period, check your state rules about whether you can continue practicing. Some states allow it during the grace period. Others do not.

After the grace period

If the grace period passes, you may need to apply for reinstatement. This can mean additional CE hours, higher fees, or in some states, retaking part or all of the licensing exam. The longer you wait, the harder reinstatement gets.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Use a tracking app like StyleCE that sends push reminders before your expiry date
  • Put your renewal date in your phone calendar with multiple alerts
  • Start your CE hours early in the renewal cycle, not at the end
  • Keep digital copies of all certificates so you are ready to submit
