License renewal doesn't have to be stressful. Most of the stress comes from not knowing what to do, or waiting too long to start.
This guide covers the general renewal process for most US states. Your state may have extra steps, but the basics are the same everywhere.
Step 1: Know your deadline
Your renewal date is based on when your license expires, not a fixed calendar date. Most states mail a reminder 30 to 60 days out, but don't count on it. Put your expiration date in your phone and set reminders.

Step 2: Finish your CE hours
If your state requires CE, finish all your hours before you submit. Watch the categories. Many states want specific hours in sanitation, laws, or health and safety. Having the right total isn't enough if the hours are in the wrong buckets.
Only use providers your state board has approved. Hours from non-approved providers may not count, and you won't find out until renewal time.

Step 3: Get your paperwork together
Before you start, make sure you have:

- •CE completion certificates (if applicable)
- •Payment for the renewal fee
- •Any required background check documentation
Step 4: Submit your renewal
Most states let you renew online through the board website. A few still want paper forms. Go to your board's site and look for the renewal portal.
Save a copy of your confirmation. Processing can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
Step 5: Check that it went through
After a few days, look up your license status online. Make sure the expiration date updated. Download or print your new license if your state offers it.
Common mistakes
Waiting until the last minute
CE courses can fill up and processing takes time. Start early in your renewal cycle.
Taking non-approved courses
Always verify your CE provider is approved by your state board before enrolling.
Ignoring category requirements
Having the right total hours is not enough if they are in the wrong categories. Check your state breakdown.
Not keeping certificates
State boards can audit your CE records. Keep digital copies of all certificates for at least one full renewal cycle.
Practicing on an expired license
Even one day of practicing with an expired license can result in fines or disciplinary action. Know your date and renew early.
What if your license already lapsed?
Most states have a grace period (usually 30 to 90 days) where you can still renew with a late fee. After that, you may need to apply for reinstatement. That can mean extra CE hours, bigger fees, or retaking the exam.
Call your state board as soon as you can. The sooner you act, the easier it is to fix.
